I am currently in Japan, and, as you read this, I am about to
launch a fabulous celebration of British culture, with the help of
two of our nation's greatest icons, William Shakespeare and
Thanks to a collaboration between De Montfort University, the
British Library and the British Council, the three-day event, which
starts today, will feature two treasures from the British Library's
collections - a pristine first edition of Shakespeare's First Folio
and the original manuscript of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock
Holmes mystery The Adventure of the Missing Three-Quarter.
The First Folio - one of the most valuable books in the world
and the only reliable source for 20 of Shakespeare's plays - is the
first collected edition of his works. It was published in 1623,
just seven years after the his death.
